Important Information

Liquor & Tobacco Laws

The legal drinking age is 21, and the legal age to purchase tobacco is 18 in the United States. Please be prepared to show your photo identification (it must clearly state your birthdate) anywhere that you order/purchase alcohol or tobacco.

Pedestrian Safety

Please make sure that you cross only at crosswalks and lights. When using a crosswalk, please make sure that you push the button so that drivers know you’re crossing.

Sales Tax & Tipping

In the United States, sales tax is not included in the advertised price. Sales tax in Florida is 7%.

Tipping is a standard practice at many places in the United States. Many of these workers make as little as $4.23 per hour. In fact, some, like the Free Beach Ride drivers, work for tips alone. Below is a suggested guide to help while you are out and about. Of course, feel free to tip extra for excellent service!

Delivery Food – 15% - 20%

Free Beach Ride - $5 to $10

Spa Services – 10% - 15%

Take Out – 10%

Taxi Drivers - 10%

Valet - $3 - $5

Waiters and Bartenders – 15% - 20%

MORE IMPORTANT INFORMATION & TIPS

In general, if you’re fishing from a boat or land and are 16 or older, you must have a fishing license. There are seasons during which certain species are available to be fished. There also may be size limits and bag limits for your catch, depending on the species. For specific information about Florida fishing regulations, please visit: http://myfwc.com/fishing

The average high/low temperatures are: January – 69/54, April – 81/65, July – 91/77 and October – 84/70.

Hurricanes are a very real part of life in Florida. Though we in St. Pete consider ourselves relatively lucky, preparedness is necessary. Hurricane Season begins on June 1st and ends on November 30th. You must know what to do in case of a hurricane, especially if an evacuation is ordered. See our Hurricane Info section for more info on hurricanes.

Please remember that for all immediate emergencies, dial 911.

Sunscreen: Always wear sunscreen with a sun protection factor containing a high rating such as 15. The sun in Florida is intense, so reapply frequently.

Water: Drink plenty of water regularly even if you do not feel thirsty.

Red Tide: Red Tide sometimes occurs during the late summer or fall. Beaches are not closed during Red Tide, and you can find out information about outbreaks from local media or FWC’s Fish & Wildlife Research Institute (research.myfwc.com). A red tide is a higher-than-normal concentration of a microscopic alga (plant-like organisms). The organism produces a toxin that can affect the central nervous system of fish. At high concentrations (a bloom) the organisms may discolor the water.

Swim Safety: Never swim alone. Stay within the designated swimming area, ideally within the visibility of a lifeguard. Keep a lookout for aquatic life. Water plants and animals may be dangerous. Avoid patches of plants and leave animals alone. Sharks are present in the Gulf year-round, but shark bites are rare.

Stingrays: In the spring and summer, it is recommended that beachgoers do the “Stingray Shuffle.” By shuffling your feet as you wade into the surf, you decrease the chance of stepping on a stingray buried under the sand. If stung, go immediately to the nearest lifeguard.

Lighting: “When thunder roars, go indoors!” We’re known for our lightning here, so please be safe and use common sense. Avoid water. Avoid the high ground. Avoid open spaces.
